  “We’re going to get pregnant soon,” Trinity said. “ I can feel it.”

  “I admit you used to be crazy in college but you’ve really mellowed out since then,” Skye said. “You do such an amazing job taking care of Trinity, and you’re protective of everyone you care about. You’ve looked after me while Cayson has been away and you’ve done a great job. Of course you’re going to be an amazing parent. You’re already an amazing person.”

  Her nice words made me feel awkward because I never expected them. I always doubted myself and wasn’t sure how mature I could be. But when Skye said that…it meant a lot. She would never lie just to make me feel better. If she thought I was a jerk, she would just say it.

  Trinity rubbed my shoulder. “You’re such an amazing man. I’m very excited to start a family with you.”

  I bowed my head and stared at the ground for a long time.

  Skye stared at me. “Slade?”

  I looked up at her.

  “Don’t doubt yourself. You have a reputation for being a little off your rocker but that label is old. You’re so different now that I don’t even recognize you sometimes.” Skye gave me a smile. “In a good way, of course.”

  Trinity kissed my cheek. “Best husband and father ever.”

  “I don’t know about that…” I shrugged.

  “I do.” Trinity leaned in and kissed me gently.

  “Cayson is going to be so excited when he gets home,” Skye said. “His baby is on the way and yours will be soon…I can picture his smile right now.”

  Knowing my best friend was going to be experiencing the same thing made me feel better. I would have someone to ask for advice. I would have someone to share stories with. And I would have someone to turn to when I was in over my head.

  Three weeks left.

  Things were looking good.

  “I can’t believe we’re almost done.” Laura walked beside me as we moved through the market in India. Tables were set up with flashy jewelry, and a lot of them contained tropical fruits like mangoes and papayas. “In just three weeks this will all be over.”

  “Yeah, it can’t come soon enough.” I was sick of living in a tent or dirty hostile. I was tired of constantly walking and working. While I loved helping people, my body needed a break. And I was tired of having a relationship with my wife through a computer screen.

  “What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get home?”

  She shrugged. “Sleep on my bed.”

  “Where are you from anyway?”

  “Originally? Or most recently?”

  “Recently.”

  “London.”

  “Cool,” I said. “I’ve only been once and I didn’t get to stay long.”

  “It’s a really cool place. It’s like New York City but cleaner.”

  I chuckled. “New York wouldn’t be New York without the pigeon vomit on the sidewalk or the gum under every crevasse and corner.”

  “Yeah…what a beautiful place.” She put her hands in her pockets and examined a booth with silk commodities. “Where do you live in the city?”

  “Actually, Skye and I just bought a house in Connecticut. It’s next door to her folks so we’re close to them.”

  “Next to your in-laws…that sounds like fun.”

  I laughed. “They’re really cool people. They’re like family to me.”

  “But still…it sucks not having any privacy.”

  “It’s not like they look through the window when we’re doing it on the couch.”

  Laura laughed then kept walking. “That would be awkward.”

  “So, are you planning on settling in London?”

  She continued to examine the different items as we passed by. “That’s the thing with me…I’m a bit of a nomad.”

  “It sounds like you’re running from something.”

  “From myself, I guess.” She crossed her arms over her chest as she walked. “It’s hard for me to stay in one place too long. I grow itchy and frustrated. I feel like I’m being held down and suffocated.”

  “When you’re always traveling you don’t have a place to call home. When you get married and have a family of your own someday, you’ll feel differently.”

  “Perhaps…if I ever marry.”

  This topic was still a little tense since she basically told me I was her ideal partner. I admit I was a catch in the eyes of most women, but I definitely didn’t think I was Prince Charming.   “Do you plan on having kids soon?”

  I was glad the subject had been changed. “I would love to start a family but we’ll probably wait a few years. Skye hasn’t taken over her company yet and she’ll probably want to get the hang of it before having a baby. For me, I’m ready anytime. I’m just waiting on her.”

  “How many kids do you want to have?”

  “At least two. Hopefully, three.”

  “That sounds nice…” She didn’t seem completely genuine but at least she was trying.

  “What about you?”

  She shook her head. “Kids aren’t on my mind.”

  “Ever?”

  “With my lifestyle, it’s just not feasible.”

  “Change your lifestyle,” I said simply. “And problem solved.”

  She smiled but it was forced. “I don’t know…it’s just not that easy for me.”

  “When you meet the right guy it will be easy.”

  She released a faint chuckle. “Yeah, if that ever happens.”

  “Well, you aren’t exactly looking in the right places. Did you really expect to meet someone in India?”

  “I see your point…”

  “Maybe if you spent more time in London you would meet a dashing guy there. I heard Brits are gentlemen.”

  “From who?”

  “My sister is marrying a Brit. But they’re living in the States.”

  “Awe,” she said. “So, they had a long distance relationship?”

  “Not really,” I said. “He would fly back and forth then he decided to stay her permanently so they could have their baby.”

  “She’s having a baby?” she asked excitedly.

  “Actually, she already had it.” I smiled when I thought about my nephew.

  “Cayson is an uncle.” She patted my shoulder quickly before she dropped her touch.

  “Yeah…it’s pretty great.”

  After we left the market we headed to our hostile. The dorms were co-ed but they were also separated by sex. Since there was no one to enforce any special conduct, Laura took the bottom bunk and I had the top.

  None of the men looked at her anymore when they thought she and I were together. She quickly became off limits and no one came near her unless it was in a professional way. They were either scared of me because of my size or because I could all make them lose their jobs. I wasn’t sure.

  I pulled out my laptop and charged it. Luckily, there were outlets here. And there was a signal, so that was even better. There were other people in the hostile but I didn’t care. I wanted to talk to my wife, even if we couldn’t do anything dirty.

  She answered immediately. “Hey, Cayson.” She smiled brightly when she looked at me. She was sitting on the couch in the living room.

  “And you cut your hair.”

  “It kept getting in my eyes.”

  “Well, you look very handsome.”

  “Thanks.” I stared at her and couldn’t stop smiling. “How’s it going over there?”

  “Good.”

  Slade ran behind the couch where I could see him. “Hey, man. Long time, no see.”

  I waved. “Hey, Slade.”

  “Dude, that’s a clean shave.”

  “Thanks. I had to make sure I got everything. Not sure when I’ll have access to a bathroom again.”

  “Where are you?” Trinity sat beside Skye.

  “India,” I said.

  “Ooh…where’s the dot that’s supposed to go between your eyes?” Slade asked.

  I rolled my eyes. “Anyway, anything new with you guys?”

  “Not a thing,” Trinity said quickly.

  “Nothing,” Slade blurted. “Nothing has changed…just same old shit, you know.” He crossed his arms over his chest then uncrossed them again like he was uncomfortable.

  They were all acting weird but I didn’t ask about it. “I really appreciate the two of you staying with Skye. It helps me s
leep at night knowing she’s not alone.”

  “No problem,” Trinity said. “We love it here.”

  “This mansion is so fucking big,” Slade said. “You could have, like, ten people live here.”

  “Thanks…” I turned down the volume so everyone wouldn’t overhear my conversation.

  “I’ve been keeping the dogs away,” Slade said. “No one has been sniffing around your woman.”

  Skye dramatically rolled her eyes.

  “Thanks,” I said. “But I’m sure Skye handles that on her own.”

  “Well, I help,” Slade said. “When I’m not doing the same for my own wife.”

  “Ignore him,” Skye said.

  “Anything new with the family?” I asked.

  “Not really,” Skye said. “Conrad is still with Lexie…he seems really happy.”

  “I like her,” I said. “She’s good for him. She’s really matured him.”

  “I like her too,” Trinity said. “And she’s not a prissy bitch like that other skank.”

  “In her defense,” Slade said. “She wasn’t a skank.”

  “Whatever,” Trinity said. “I still didn’t like her.”

  “And your brother didn’t like me for a really long time,” Slade said.

  This conversation could go on for a while. “How’s Sean doing?”

  “Good,” Skye said. “I think he’s coming back to work soon.”

  “Awesome,” I said. “I’m glad to hear that.”

  “Scarlet always drops off food here,” Slade said. “Like, every day. It’s a sweet deal.”

  “That does sound nice,” I said. “I hope she’ll drop off dinner when I’m around.”

  “No one will be dropping by when you come home,” Skye said immediately and with a meaningful look on her face. “We’ll put a Do Not Disturb sign outside if we have to.” She turned to Trinity and Slade. “And you guys will be gone for sure.”

  “Like we want to hear you guys screw all day,” Slade snapped.

  “I’m sure you’ll want to screw Cayson yourself when he comes home,” Trinity teased.

  “Hey, two guys can’t love each other without being called homos?” Slade asked. “You two love each other and I don’t tease you about it.”
