  She glared at me then answered the phone. “Hello?” She didn’t sound happy.

  Her brother spoke on the other line.

  “How did you know I lived in New York?” she said.

  I had no idea what they were talking about but I patiently listened.

  “Dad told you?” she asked incredulously.

  My heart started to accelerate. Then I heard his voice over the phone.

  “I need to tell you something. I want to talk in person.”

  “The phone will suffice,” Beatrice said.

  I couldn’t believe how cold she was being.

  “Beatrice, stop being a pain in the ass and agree to meet me. There’s someone I want to introduce you to.”

  “Dad?”

  “No,” he snapped. “I know how you feel about him. Now tell me where you want to meet. I’m in the city. I can come by your place or we can meet elsewhere.”

  I knew Beatrice would never hand over her address.

  “Fine,” she said. “How about Starbucks?”

  “That’s fine.”

  “I’m bringing my boyfriend.”

  “Good,” he said. “I want to meet him.” He hung up without another word.

  She tossed her phone aside. “My dad told him I lived in the city.”

  I didn’t dare speak. If she knew I spoke to her father, she would kick me in the balls then dump me.

  “How did he know that?”

  “A simple credit check would tell him,” I explained.

  She sighed then grabbed her coat. “My brother wants to meet me. I don’t know what he wants.”

  “You’re coming,” she said.

  “I assumed I was.”

  “Then let’s go.” She walked out and didn’t wait for me to follow.

  When we walked inside, Beatrice immediately spotted her brother. “He’s wearing the gray collared shirt.”

  I examined him, and realized he looked similar to Beatrice. He had the same dark hair and bright green eyes. He was built, covered in swollen muscles. He was my height, and not someone I’d want to piss off.

  Her brother wasn’t alone. He had a pretty woman next to him. She was blonde and thin. Her beautiful features and perfect proportions immediately reminded me of Barbie. I preferred brunettes so she didn’t do anything for me.

  “I guess that’s the person he wants me to meet,” she said as she walked forward.

  Her brother reached her first and looked her up and down. “You’re looking well.” Then he hugged her.

  She returned the embrace but with very little heart. “Hello, William.”

  William turned his gaze on me. Then he extended his hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Conrad.”

  I took it, wondering how he knew my name. The only person who could have told him was her father. I hoped he didn’t mention our frequent meetings to discuss Beatrice. “You t

  He examined me for a moment before he turned to his fiancée. “Beatrice, this is Kelly.”

  She even had a Barbie-ish name.

  “Nice to meet you.” Beatrice was warm and nice to her.

  Kelly shook her hand. “You too.”

  “She’s my fiancée,” William said as he put his arm around her.

  “Oh…” Beatrice’s eyes widened while she stared at her brother. “Wow…congratulations.”

  “Thank you,” he said. “And that’s not all.” He moved his hand to Kelly’s stomach. “We’re expecting.”

  “Really?” Beatrice seemed genuinely excited. “That’s wonderful, William!” She hugged him again, showing true enthusiasm.

  He returned her embrace with a laugh. “I knew that would break that cold exterior of yours.”

  Beatrice pulled away and looked at Kelly. “When’s the wedding?”

  “In a few weeks,” William said. “She wants to get married before she gets too big.” He rolled his eyes. “Like she wouldn’t be beautiful anyway.”

  Kelly smiled at him but stayed quiet.

  “I’m so happy for you guys,” Beatrice said. “I’m sorry I’ve been so…”

  “Distant? Cold? Rude? Annoying?” William gave her a pointed look. “Yeah, it gets old.”

  Beatrice tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, clearly uncomfortable.

  “Leave her alone,” Kelly whispered.

  “No,” William said. “Just because I still talk to Dad she exiled me. It’s totally unfair. Well, she’s got a niece or nephew on the way.” He turned to Beatrice. “Are you going to exile them too?”

  Beatrice crossed her arms over her chest. “Of course not.”

  Normally, I would defend her, but in this case, I was on her brother’s side. She exiled her entire family because of what happened to her mom. I had no right to judge her for it because I’d never experienced such a tragedy, but she wasn’t handling it in the right way. If I thought her father was a heartless coward, I wouldn’t bother meeting him to discuss Beatrice. But I really thought he truly cared about her.

  “Well, I really want you to get to know your sister-in-law and not disappear off the face of the earth,” William said. “That’s not much to ask for.”

  Beatrice was growing more uncomfortable. “So, you just wanted to meet me to make me feel like dirt?”
