  “I know, Wilder.”

  “Just want to make sure you understand that. If things become too much, you can always bow out.”

  “That won’t be a problem.” Even though I’d only completed one mission, this felt right. I never cared about school or anything else. While this was dangerous, I was passionate about it. In that very moment, a rescued child was sleeping on me. What could be a greater reward than that?

  “We still have to take care of your father. Not all missions will be as straight-forward as this.”

  “I know, Wilder.”

  The look in his eyes suggested he wanted to keep pressing his point, but he held back. “I should get back to the cockpit. Get some sleep if you can.”

  “Okay.”

  He gave me a final look full of unsaid words before he left the chair and returned to the front of the plane.

  I leaned back in the chair and stared at Daniel. While this felt good, not everything would feel like this. There would be times when I got hurt, and continuing this profession would force me to be with Wilder more than I wanted. After what happened between us, I knew I would never get the relationship I wanted. I needed to let him go and move on.

  But I wanted to save people more than remove him from my life.

  I had to make a choice, and I already decided what that choice would be. This was my new life now. I was officially a secret agent of RB12 and my objective was to save as many people as possible. I would put my life on the line every day, but that was a small price to pay for such a big reward. Committing my life to something greater than myself was what I was meant to do. There was no doubt.

  This was where I was meant to be.
